Harley Davidson  Bike to be launched in India. Date not yet finalised.

India's commerce ministry is drafting a law that would allow for the import and sale of heavyweight motorcycles produced by the Milwaukee-based manufacturer. The report cited a ministry official who did not wish to be identified.

Under current law, Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) is prohibited from entering the Indian market because the country does not have emission regulations covering the large engines that drive most Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The new law will have India adopting emission regulations now in place in Europe.

Harley-Davidson's imports would still be subject to a 60-percent tariff and other surcharges that would raise the price of most motorcycles to the same level as many automobiles, the report said.

Now theres a relief for the Indians who want to get their Harleys.

Price of the smallest Harleys, the 883cc powered Sportster, is more than $6,600 (Rs. 2.9 lakh) in the US.

Now even if it brings this smallest bike to India that price will shoot up to Rs 4lakh because of more than 100% tariff.

Well for a commoner and not so passionate Indian biker can buy a car where the cheapest car available in India today costs Rs 2 lakh; by next year, the country will have one that costs half that, made by Tata Motors.

So Harley has a different segment to cater and yes there should be no problem conisdering the dropping value of USD and the ever growing GDP with the youth spending power......

Hi guys wat do u think if some one was abel to bring some customs to India.
Well i was thinking of creating a customs choppers bike in my garage But in our country their r a lot of problems to bring them on road so can any one help with roles & regulations we r bond to plz guys
i want to use a imported engin & transmision with my own custom made chase & everything else

itz an india launched product...why the hell wud it cost 3.1lac more to get it on-road...
the insurance would be somewhere around 28,000 & the Registration is another 1500-2000 bucks....
there aren't any Duties...then how come 10lacs???

well as far as i know, there is an import duty of 60+30+18% tax of Indian Govt..

but, the 6,95,000 is an ex-showroom price of India(DELHI)...there cannot be any import duties, those are HARLEY's headache.....
once a bike is launched by a company, the duties are taken care of...
for example, an R1 now costs around 13.2lacs ON-ROAD...which is 12.5lacs ex-showroom_whereas, if you import an R6, it would cost you around 11lacs on-road(instead of the 7-8lacs as it should have been) due to duties...
i'm not sure of the absolute VALUES, but don't think that these bikes will attract those Import Duties & Hassles!!!!

m not sure mate.. i just read it somewhere. what u say is logical ..
